CHAPTER SEVEN

Kalric’s breath hitched. “Miss Ferndale,” he said. “That would truly be entering my lair. Are you certain?”

“I’m certain.” Nova stepped forward, and this time she was the one who pressed her lips against his throat. “Shall we investigate other ways in which we are compatible?”

Everything tilted as Kalric swept her up in his arms and continued forward in a hurry. What a ridiculous, dramatic man. Nova clung to him and laughed.

“We’re over thirty,” she teased. “You’ll injure yourself with this kind of exertion.”

“As you’ve noted, I heal quickly.”

They came to a stop not far from the observatory, and Kalric opened a door to darkness. For someone who had to avoid all sunlight, sleeping up on one of the higher floors was quite the risk. Before she could lecture him, magitech sconces lit up and cast a warm glow over the room.

Kalric’s “lair,” much like his study, was lined with bookcases. There was a plush reading chair in a corner, and beside it was a low table for tea. To the right of a massive wooden wardrobe was an adjoining chamber she assumed was dedicated to bathing, like hers. All of the windows had heavy velvet curtains drawn over them, similar to the dining hall, and she hoped the glass was either blackened or covered by an additional layer of protection.

What Nova’s attention lingered on the most, however, was the four-poster bed centered along the far wall. Velvet curtains draped over it, too—at least he’d taken that precaution—and it was piled with an excessive number of pillows.

“What do you think?” Kalric asked.

“Far too much color for a dread lair.” The wood was all a deep, rich brown with gold undertones, and both the wallpaper and rugs were dark blue with gilded detailing. Celestial. Magical. “No Ashcroft silver and black here?”

“No, not here. This is a place just for me.”

Kalric carried her to the bed and sat her down on the edge. Nova caught one of his hands and brought it to her cheek. “You don’t mind that I’m here?” she asked.

“You belong here, too,” Kalric said. “Because when I dream, I mostly dream of you.”

Was that because of his own longing or was it willed by Seranyx? If Her Lunar Divinity was at work, what was the purpose behind the dreams? Were they urging her and Kalric to seek each other again, or were they a warning to stay away from each other?

The thought of all the time wasted staying away from him so far was unbearable. Nova grasped the front of his shirt and pulled him down toward her for another kiss. Kalric’s lips brushed hers, far too briefly, and before she could deepen the kiss, he slid into the bed beside her and raised a hand to the high collar of her robe.

“May I?” Kalric said, eyes fixed on hers. He did not move as he awaited her permission.

All night, Nova had watched those hands as they worked with confidence and patience. Even while bloodstained, they were elegant. Skilled.
